Car Posters From Our Youth

Whenever I highlight posts from other sites like this one from Jalopnik.com I typically need to decide which image to choose for my lead in. A lot of times it may be the actual photo from the article. Sometimes I will use Google to try to grab another one that better describes my angle on the link, and other times (like this one) the story comes with a gallery to choose from.

I just had to laugh at today's selection because I immediately knew the car and the models, and I seriously doubt my children have heard of either of them. Although Hall and Oates have produced a CD within the most recent decade, it was really just to placate those older fans like myself that were looking to add some current flavor to our collection but still love the old throwbacks (can I hear a Steely Dan out there?).

Anyway, the Fiero was one of the most quirky vehicles ever produced by the now defunct GM subsidiary Pontiac. Plastic body panels, 12 foot long radiator hoses and "My insurance is gonna cost WHAT?" are some of the things I remember. There is probably an active Fiero fan club out there even now. What finally killed them was the Pintoesque attribute of bursting into flames (not a good selling point).

It's all about the keywords... OK, it has nothing to do with selling auto parts. I still felt like you would appreciate the intent. If you do, log into our site and buy some ACDelco parts or Motorcraft parts... anything.

Thanks !!

Space Saving Key Device

Cool device... Kind of reminds me of my Cub Scout Swiss Army knife, and I loved it! Some people get a feeling of importance or security by carrying around 47 pounds of keys and key chains, but I would prefer a streamlined device like this. The 112 keys on a three foot tether does make a convenient weapon in case you are attacked. The choice is now yours.

Local Dragstrip Nightmare...

You never want to see this, but it is part of racing. The driver got out just fine (around .30 he jumps the wall) but I don't think his car survived.

Mercedes Designed by Porsche

1930 Mercedes-Benz 710 SSK Trossi Roadster
Posted: February 13, 2010 | Author: RONNIEROCKET.COM | Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: 1930, Boston, Count Trossi, Ferdinand Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Ralph Lauren | Leave a comment »

This car is 83 years old. It is so ahead of its – and our – time that it has practically lapped itself.

It is the legendary Mercedes Benz Trossi SSK, the last car that Ferdinand Porsche designed before he started his own company. (That would be Porsche). Only five still exist, and this one was owned by Count Trossi himself. Its now owned by Ralph Lauren, and you can watch the light rays surrender at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Thanks for the info on this car... Ronnie Rocket.

A Motorcycle for Your Granny?

The Amplio Electric Motorcycle is our newest example of the leading edge of personal transportation and the need to travel further on less charging time. While battery technology seems to be the limiting factor, design is making inroads into solving (or at least easing) the limitations on acceptance. The first hurdle seems to be solved in that we are seeing electric vehicles that can get us to work and back on a single charge.

For full replacement of our internal combustion dinosaurs however we need an electric vehicle that will allow us to jump in the car on a whim, after the bar closes, when we decide it is time for a road trip across the country to see that old girlfriend... without getting stranded 80 miles from home along a desolated stretch of sketchy two lane "highway".

The Chevy Volt design seems to be the front runner in car designs, but it still needs petrol to charge it's batteries. The NEXT vehicle either needs an unlimited type of battery, maybe nuclear?, or can somehow be charged in minutes if not seconds. Another possibility would be the acceptance of a universal design type (re VHS vs BETA) that could be easily swapped out by Granny on her way to brunch after Church each Sunday.

In all the Amplio is a good interim design. However, the items mentioned above need to be addressed. I can't see my Granny riding it either, would yours?

Look Close, Where is the elk?

Marketing 101

Remember Beta? Many people don’t. Back when VCRs were the next big thing (and setting the VCR clock became a 2-hour chore)… there were two VCR formats: VHS and Beta. By all accounts, Beta was better. It had far better picture quality, and its cassettes were smaller and more portable. Yet through better marketing, VHS enjoyed a 90% market share. And Beta quietly disappeared. You can have the world’s greatest product or service, but without the right marketing and message, no one will know. Start creating demand… nightingale.com
